The small town of Wiesensteig is picturesquely nestled among the steep slopes of the Swabian Alb and is a state-recognized resort town. The charming landscape, with its juniper heaths, forests, and rock formations, makes the town an ideal starting point for hikes and nature experiences.

A well-developed network of hiking trails crisscrosses the Alb plateau and offers varied routes for both leisure hikers and ambitious hiking enthusiasts. Attractive vantage points, including the striking rock spire known as the “Steinernes Weib,” offer impressive views of the Alb landscape.

One of the most popular destinations is the source of the Fils River. The Fils rises here in an idyllic valley and winds its way through meadows and the characteristic landscape of the Upper Fils Valley. Wiesensteig has been captivating visitors for centuries with its natural surroundings and its eventful history.

    Author’s recommendation

    • At the Wiesensteiger Tälesbad, situated in an idyllic location with a spacious sunbathing lawn along the Fils River, water lovers and swimming enthusiasts can enjoy one of the most delightful summer pastimes.
    • Wiesensteiger Residential Castle: It served as the residence of the Helfenstein family of counts until their line died out in 1627. During the Fürstenberg and Bavarian periods, until Wiesensteig was transferred to the Geislingen district in 1810, the castle served as an administrative seat. The castle, which had since become redundant, was sold and demolished except for the south wing. From 1983 to 1986, the castle underwent extensive renovation and was converted into a community center. Today, its rooms provide a festive setting for family and corporate celebrations, conferences, exhibitions, and cultural events.

    Roadbook

We start at the castle parking lot and follow the signs along the trail through the beech forest up to the Kreuzkapelle. The trail is lined with several Stations of the Cross. Once we reach the Alb plateau, we arrive at a lookout point by the Kreuzkapelle that offers a wonderful view of the town and the Upper Filstal Valley.

Next, on the trail through the Bläsihöfe, we pass the Rosenhof with its riding school. After passing the Eckhöfe, the trail continues close to the Albtrauf escarpment. Along the way, we reach the Wiesensteiger ski area with its summer ski jump and barbecue area. At the Hunting and Nature Education Center/Schützenhaus, we take the Wiesenweg, which leads us back up into the forest and halfway up the Sommerberg.
