The Črno Jezero (Black Lake) Trail invites you to explore one of Pohorje’s most captivating natural wonders, a tranquil peat bog lake located at 1,200 m above sea level. Surrounded by dense spruce forests, the lake is known as the “black pearl of Pohorje” due to its dark waters, which contrast beautifully with the lush greenery around it. The lake’s color results from layers of organic silt at the bottom, formed by years of decomposed plant and animal matter.

This nature reserve, part of Pohorje’s protected landscapes, offers visitors the chance to admire its unique flora and fauna, including peat moss and swamp vegetation. The lake is the largest on Pohorje and was artificially dammed over 130 years ago by Count Windischgraetz to assist in wood harvesting.

    Hiking Options:

    • From Three Kings (Trije Kralji): A gentle 3.98 km hike through the forest, ideal for families and casual hikers.
    • From Osankarica: A short and easy 970 m walk, perfect for a quick visit.
    • From Oplotnica: A more challenging 9.23 km route with a significant 954 m elevation gain, suitable for experienced hikers.

    Additional Highlights:

    • Extend your hike from Osankarica to visit the Pohorje Battalion Monument, a tribute to local history.
    • Immerse yourself in Pohorje’s stunning landscapes while enjoying peaceful trails of varying difficulty.

The Black Lake Trail offers a serene escape into nature, combining breathtaking scenery, ecological richness, and historical significance for a truly memorable experience.

    Roadbook

    From Osankarica

The most direct route to the lake starts from Dom na Osankarici, which lies on the Pohorje ridge. From the lodge, the marked trail heads southeast through gently rolling forest terrain.

The hike to Črno jezero takes about 30–40 minutes, covering mostly flat ground with minor elevation changes. Along the way, hikers can also learn about the area's historical significance, including memorial sites from World War II.

This is the easiest and shortest access point, ideal for families, school groups, and casual hikers.

    From Trije Kralji

A longer and more varied route begins at Trije Kralji, a ski and hiking center on the northern side of Pohorje. The marked trail first follows gravel and forest roads before joining hiking paths that descend slightly toward the lake.

The walk to Črno jezero from here takes about 1.5 to 2 hours one way, depending on conditions and pace. The route is moderately challenging due to a mix of surfaces and gentle elevation gain on the return leg.

This route offers scenic views and is well-suited for a half-day hike with additional options to visit Osankarica or connect to longer Pohorje trails.

    From Oplotnica

For experienced hikers seeking a full-day mountain adventure, Oplotnica provides a lowland entry point. The trail climbs steadily from the village through forest, past waterfalls and cultural sites like the Oplotnica Gorge.

The hike to Črno jezero takes around 3.5 to 4.5 hours one way, with an elevation gain of approximately 800 meters. It’s a strenuous ascent, but well worth the effort for those wanting to explore the full vertical profile of Pohorje.

Ideal for well-prepared hikers with good fitness, this route offers one of the most immersive approaches to the Black Lake.

    On the Trail

Once at Črno jezero, visitors can enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of the peat bog lake, view educational panels, and rest on benches nearby. The lake is protected—bathing and leaving trails are prohibited. It’s a popular stop on long-distance routes such as the Pohorje Hiking Trail and the Slovenian Mountain Trail.
