Bitburger LandGänge - St. Thomas Monastery Circular - Circular Route
Hiking on the traces of the Cistercians - the approximately 6.9 km circular route runs around the small village of St. Thomas.
The silence and seclusion of the Kyll Valley is what makes St. Thomas attractive. The small village in the Kyllburger Waldeifel owes its name to the former St. Thomas monastery. The oldest Cistercian nunnery in Germany was founded around 1185 in the beautiful Kyll Valley. A fire in 1742 destroyed the entire abbey, only the church remained intact. The former monastery is the ideal place to come to yourself. Right at the beginning, the path leads you through a romantic garden area of the monastery, inviting you to pause. Take your time on this hike. Come to rest and forget everyday life away from noise and hustle.
In the midst of the magnificent nature of the Kyll Valley, you will discover beautiful wide views over the Kyll Valley between lots of forest.
Highlights on the way:
- St. Thomas Monastery
- Pilgrim stone of the St. Mathias Brotherhood Gelsenkirchen-Schlesen from 1623

Roadbook
We start our hike at the parking lot on the main street in front of St. Thomas Monastery.
The path leads us past the monastery through the garden area onto the St. Thomas Nature Experience Trail. We follow the trail for a few meters through the Heilenbach Valley. Afterwards, the path takes us for several kilometers through the Steinborn Forest. Once we reach the height, the path takes us a small way out of the forest with magnificent views of the Kyll Valley. After a few meters, we enter the forest again; after about 2 km, a short but steep descent leads us back to St. Thomas. The last kilometer leads us past meadows and the Kyll. We follow Kyllweg Street back to the main street and to the starting point of our hike.
The path is very demanding with ascents and steep descents. Depending on the season, the forest floor can be very moist.
