A great challenge and highly recommended with an overnight stay at the Karwendelhaus for experienced hikers. But even well-equipped and rested, the passage through the Schlauchkar will be a strenuous path through arduous scree, two steps forward, one step back.
We leave the Karwendelhaus towards Hochalmsattel to immediately climb up the steep slopes in tight switchbacks just behind an outbuilding to the right (signposted and marked). This is followed by a traverse between avalanche protection structures into the southwest and south slopes of the Hochalmkreuz. Always roughly southeastwards, we gradually enter the Schlauchkar. At first, the path between large blocks still proves to be relatively pleasant, although not particularly enjoyable. Only at a slight bend below the Schlauchkarkopf does it get serious: The slopes now rise continuously up to the Schlauchkarsattel, the scree becomes increasingly finer and the Schlauchkar lives up to its name. Once in the saddle, all efforts fall away as the seemingly endless panorama stretches from the High Tauern to the Ötztal Alps and northwards into the Bavarian Prealps.
