A characteristic feature of the Kraichgau is its hollow ways; nowhere else can you find such a wealth of these peculiar landscape forms. Especially agricultural carts created the deep cuts in the surrounding farmland, which today mostly stand under nature protection. We will get to know several different hollows on this hike, each fascinating in its own way.
From the station in Zeutern, we walk keeping to the left towards Kapellenstraße. Passing the massive sandstone cross, we follow Wolfgangstraße to the cemetery. Passing it on the right, we enter the first hollow way of our hike, the Hirschhohle. These paths, cut up to 15 m deep into the loess, were formed by centuries of agricultural use with vehicles and carts. Erosion and washing away of the fine sandy substrate led to progressive deepening. Most hollow ways are no longer used by vehicles today but are valuable habitats for plants and animals, especially birds and insects. Due to the dark, poorly visible path, some legends and horror stories arose. Albrecht Ritter
