Vast, shady forests teeming with rich flora and fauna characterize much of this hike. A special feature is the route of a former railroad, lined with engineering structures (inaugurated in 1891, closed to passenger service in 1938 and to freight service in 1953), which offers beautiful views of the Blye Moor and the Ain forest gorge.
From the parking lot at the former train station (Ancienne Gare) in Verges, we continue east along the small access road, keep right at the first fork, and cross a bridge. Immediately after that, we turn right again and come to the route of the former railroad line from Lons-le-Saunier to Champagnole, whose tracks have been removed (here on the right). On the solid-gravel track bed, we immediately pass through a tunnel approximately 200 m long that is partially paved; with a little caution, this poses no problem. The route then winds almost flat through beautiful forest in wide loops—ignoring a forest trail to the left (the direct route to the parking lot). Passing through flower-filled meadows with views of the Blye Moor and the Combe d’Ain to the right, we then reach—after crossing a bridge—an artificial rock cutting that was constructed at the time to avoid elevation changes.
