Before you leave, take a moment to look inside theSt. Bavo Chapel. The chapel, which stands on a small hill, is surrounded by linden trees. The current chapel likely dates from around 1600, but there may have been a chapel there earlier. The hamlet of Trichelhoek is considered the oldest settlement in Eindhout (12th–13th centuries).
After leaving the chapel, walk 50 meters west (turn right as you leave the chapel), then take the path to the left toward junction 327. The walk does indeed follow the hiking junction network for a large part of the way, and for that section, you won’t find a detailed description here...
At junction 327, we continue straight ahead toward 157. If you want to go to thebird-watching hut, pay close attention:
At one point, the route takes a 90° turn to the right. There is also an information sign from Natuur.punt here. Turn right, but after about 100–150 m, a trail branches off to the left into the woods. This trail leads you to a beautiful bird-watching hut overlooking a very large pond (I’m tempted to call it a lake). If you don’t have a dog with you, don’t miss this observation hut. Unfortunately, if you have a dog, this area is off-limits to you.
Retrace your steps, then continue toward junction 157. We continue along the paved (but very quiet) road toward junction 325, then straight ahead toward 44.
As we cross the Grote Laak, we see a renovated farmhouse, theBlaardonkhoeve—a former settlement of Averbode Abbey—on the right side of the road.
At junction 44, turn right toward 330, where we have to cross the (busy) road to enter the Westelseweg toward 323, and then turn right again toward 41. Between 323 and 41, you’ll walk through an attractive, small-scale agricultural landscape, and as you approach junction 41, the beautiful Kaaibeekhoeve comes into view.
At junction 41, we turn right toward 213. Junction 213 is located a few hundred meters past the Kaaibeekhoeve on the other bank of the Grote Nete. We chose not to cross the Nete, but to stay on the left bank. So, just before the bridge over the Grote Nete, we turn right. This bank is just as easy to walk along as the other bank, but because the junction network markers are on the opposite side, that’s where most hikers walk, while it remained very quiet on our bank. After one and a half kilometers, we cross back over the busy road we had crossed earlier and continue to follow the bank of the Grote Nete (immediately after the road, we cross the bridge over the Grote Laak).
About one kilometer further on, there is a pedestrian bridge over the Nete. From here, there were a few more hikers on “our” bank, because the hiking trail network runs from this small bridge (junction 53) on the other side of the little river, and we’re heading toward junction 52, so after about half a kilometer we leave the dike along the Grote Nete to descend via a steep stretch of trail into the marshlands.
From junction 52, we continue a short distance toward junction 157. Where the route turns right at an AVEVE, we’ll turn right as well, but after just 50 meters, we’ll take the road on the left (St. Bavo Street), which, with a sharp left turn, quickly brings us back to the St. Bavo Chapel.
