The trail ascends moderately, before us through the dense forest, leaving the village of Gais behind us.
Those who are attentive catch several glimpses of the once stately "Kehlburg".
The first wonderful view appears already after about 1 hour, when the forest clears and you can overlook the entire Bruneck basin. The nearly 100-year-old maple tree, located near the hamlet and mountain inn "Amaten," is a frequently photographed subject and invites you to linger and admire.
A few hundred meters of the trail now run along the country road leading to Tesselberg. The signs on the left roadside indicating the Bettelsteig are not to be missed.
The "Bettelsteig," a path particularly used by beggars, immediately leads into the Tesselberg forest. Here is the former collapse site that caused the debris cone of "Gais."
A short section of the trail has unfortunately been replaced by a forest road. However, there is heavenly peace.
Pleasantly, with slight ups and downs, the hiking trail leads close to the mountain village of "Tesselberg." A detour to the village is worthwhile, offering again an expansive panoramic view.
On the return journey, we encounter the "Kehlburg" ruin, hidden in the dense deciduous forest, once an impressive castle built by the bishops of Brixen.
After another short descent, the starting point "Bärental" is reached.
Author’s recommendation
Especially in winter, check whether the trail is passable;
If you are traveling by public transport, you should include an additional ascent time of about half an hour in your planning, as the starting point is slightly lower, either in the village of Gais or in the village of Aufhofen;
