A hike around the Alpspitze offers plenty of variety. The area around the Kreuzeck is bustling, while the Stuibensee and the impressively wild Grießkar are peaceful. Picturesque peaks and towering rock faces rise above flower-filled meadows. The secured rocky section known as “Schöngänge” offers an easy climbing challenge, before you can marvel at a magnificent view of the Loisach Valley from the Bernadeinkopf.
From the Kreuzeckbahn valley station, we take the cable car up to the Kreuzeck, 1,650 m. From there, we hike south down to a nearby saddle and then, to the left of the ridge, follow the wide trail past bizarre little towers to the Hochalm, 1,703 m. A wide gravel path continues south into a gap in the Aschengrat ridge with its striking jagged peaks. We arrive at a mountain basin (here, turn left for the easier route to Stuibensee) and, at a right-hand curve, continue straight ahead toward a ledge of scree and rock. We pass the turnoff for the difficult Mauerläufer via ferrata on our left and climb up the well-secured “Schöngänge” via an easy climb to the Bernadeinscharte. To the left, we reach the Bernadeinkopf, 2,143 m, in a few minutes. The descent route runs southward below the Bernadeinkopf, passing by and heading downhill across stony meadows. Over a rugged ledge, we reach the small Stuibensee, 1,921 m, an idyllic spot set against the backdrop of the rugged Wetterstein walls. From
