As quiet as the Paradiso Group may usually be (except for Cogne): Pont is a bustling hub in the summer, where hundreds of mountaineers gather daily to climb Gran Paradiso, once considered the “easiest” four-thousander—a peak that has since become nearly impassable due to glacial retreat in its lower section. But on summer days, the trail to the half-barrel-shaped Rifugio Vittorio Emanuele II resembles a caravan of heavily laden tourists. Nevertheless, the landscape remains unique.
From Pont on the left (western) side of the valley, walk about 20 minutes down the valley before the Hüttenweg trail winds its way up through the forest and across meadows between two torrents. Pass the ruins of the alpine village of Lo Tsante on the hut trail to Rif. Vittorio Emanuele. From there, turn left (NW) onto Trail 1A, which winds gently up and down along the connecting path to Rif. Chabod, offering a beautiful view of the northwest face of Gran Paradiso. From here, take Trail 5 downhill in numerous switchbacks across the Alpe de Lavassey and steeply through the forest down to the alluvial fan where the Pravieux alpine huts (1,834 m) are located. Turn right and cross the river to the huts at Terre.
