Ben Hope is Scotland's northernmost Munro and dominates the remote and lake-rich landscape of Strath More from afar. Especially from the north, from Loch Hope, the view of the mountain is impressive. However, the decisive factor for the memory of a beautiful or less beautiful day in the Highlands is the weather. Here, even more than elsewhere in Scotland, the light can change sometimes by the minute. The keen observer feels as if one stage set is constantly being replaced by another.
"BEN HOPE – Way up" is written on a dented sign at the parking lot. And you actually don't need to pay much more attention, as the normal route to the mountain is easy and straightforward to find. We follow the heavily eroded path in some places, which leads steeply upwards on the south side of the Allt a’ Mhuiseil. After about 400 meters of elevation gain, we reach the broad southern ridge of Ben Hope. Here we turn left. Always parallel to the steep western cliffs, we ascend over wide grass and scree areas to the north until we reach the highest point, including a cairn and survey post. At the summit of Ben Hope, one feels like at the end of the world, the view seems limitless: the panorama includes to the north the winding fjords and lakes between Durness and Tongue, to the east the distinctive granite summit of Ben Loyal, to the southeast Ben Klibreck and to the west numerous peaks such as Foinaven and Arkle. The return journey is made via the way there.
