The walk takes us from Rennweg, whose name recalls the "Scharlachrennen," a horse race in the St. Marx area, through the Botanical Garden of the University of Vienna, founded in 1754. The garden, serving scientific purposes, is about 8 hectares in size and houses approximately 9,500 species; greenhouses, a tropical house, and an experimental house complement the open areas. The Swiss Garden, which we find beyond the Gürtel, is a park created on a former open area outside the Linienwall. We complete the circuit by descending back down to Rennweg through the newly designed park area of the Belvedere, known for its valuable art collections, with a gentle slope.
Culture and nature can ideally be combined on this walk: We start at the transport hub at Rennweg and walk from the Rennweg/Fasangasse intersection into the city towards Jacquingasse. We turn left and then right into Mechelgasse, which leads us to the lower entrance of the Botanical Garden of the University of Vienna. The park, divided into several display groups with various greenhouses, can be visited free of charge here. Native and exotic plants are lovingly cultivated here. Through the park's upper exit, we reach Landstraßer Gürtel; opposite, we enter the Swiss Garden. The garden was created in 1904 after the demolition of the so-called Linienwall. Today, several monuments stand on the area between the new Vienna main station and the Arsenal, including the State Founding Monument by sculptor Heinrich Deutsch and one in memory of the education pioneer Rudolf Steiner. We also find the 21er-Haus here. After walking through the Swiss Garden, we return to the Landstraßer Gürtel/Prinz
