Mont Paramont, at 3,300 m, is one of the most secluded three-thousand-meter peaks in the northern Rutor Group; its summit, slopes, and valleys are virtually never visited. Our route crosses this region—traversing several side ranges—to bypass the only section of the Alta Via 2 (see Tour 39) that was glaciated until a few years ago. And in doing so, to immerse ourselves completely in the quiet mountain world. The austere, rocky landscape is a true no-man’s-land for tourists and mountaineers alike, so much so that often not even the most striking peaks and lakes have names! The names listed here refer to IGC Map 3, which is the only map on which this sparsely marked route is shown.
From La Tuile, take the mountain hut trail to Rifugio Deffeyes; see Tour 39. From there, a marked trail leads gently uphill through the Combe des Ussellettes to Passo Alto, 2,860 m. The subsequent descent into the Vallone d’en Haut is significantly steeper and less well marked; just above Lac de Lenteney, you cross eastward off-trail. From the lakeshore, follow a path with little elevation gain northeastward above a cliff, where you’ll come upon a faintly marked trail leading to Colle Crosatti, 2,850 m (shown on IGC Map 107 northeast of Colle delle Molette near P. 2,833). Follow the trail marks steeply south to the eastern shore of Lago di Fond and to the ruined houses of the Baracche di Fond, where you’ll meet the Alta Via 2. Descend to Alpe del Ghiacciaio, “Glacier Alp,” and continue across glacial scour and pastures—where the old mule trail is sometimes hard to make out—down to La Clusaz, “Klause,” 1,631 m, above a narrow section of Val Grisenche. Here you’ll come upon the valley
