Touristik & Freizeit Sankt Wendeler Land
Over winding paths and natural trails, the beaver path leads through an outcrop of the Saar-Nahe mountain range, which gives the route several steep climbs. Characteristic are the protected valley meadows as well as original stream courses in which the beaver dwells.
The nearly 17 km long beaver path around Berschweiler impresses with a demanding and varied route. Over winding paths and natural trails, it leads the hiker in about 6 hours through an outcrop of the Saar-Nahe mountain range. About 540 meters of altitude have to be mastered. In total, six heights open up magnificent views, partly with an impressive 360° panorama.
Characteristic for the beaver path are the protected valley meadows with idyllic riparian forests and fishponds as well as original stream courses inhabited by the beaver. Open fields and meadow landscapes, diverse deciduous and spruce forests, and a fairy-tale-like ravine complete the picture and enhance the nature and hiking experience.
Directly on the beaver path, there are also historically interesting places: historic boundary stones that separated the Schaumburg land from Nassau Saarbrücken for centuries, quarries that supplied villagers with building materials until the 20th century, and "Schachen" forests, whose sale once replenished Napoleon's war chest.
Author’s recommendation
Since the reopening of the Tholey Abbey in October 2020, 37 newly designed church windows can be admired there. Three of the choir windows were designed by Gerhard Richter, the most important living artist of our time.
After the hike, take a detour to the Finkenrech Environmental and Leisure Center with its herb garden and medicinal plants.
Next to the BiberBurg is the Marian pilgrimage site Härtelwald, one of the community's tourist highlights. In the 19th century, the Härtelwald was the scene of special events: in 1876, the Virgin Mary is said to have appeared to three children there. Overnight, a "German Lourdes" emerged, which is still visited by many thousands of pilgrims every year. From 2004 to 2008, the buildings (chapel with outdoor devotion site, Way of the Cross with crucifixion group, spring with place of devotion) were extensively renovated and supplemented by a visitor center.
The gliding airfield is also one of the attractions. The state training center for glider pilots has been the venue for state and European championships several times. The site is also of tourist importance as a provider of scenic flights for those who want to view the forested, hilly, and above all beautiful Saarland from a bird's-eye view.

Attention:
Entering the forest and walking the trails is fundamentally at your own risk!
Seasonal and weather-related conditions require increased sure-footedness on some trail sections. Please wear clothing and hiking boots with appropriate soles adapted to the season and weather. Be cautious of broken branches and damaged trees. With strong wind as well as winter conditions due to snow and ice, the risk from falling trees and crown parts increases.

Roadbook
Right at the beginning, the hiker passes the BiberBurg, a school country home & nature experience center. Over paths through a forest section, it goes uphill, partly in steeper sections. At the height "Im Bärenbest" the path continues along the forest edge and leads downhill to the nature reserve at the Ill and the crossing of the country road L 133.
It goes steeper uphill again and along the border of the fields, parallel to the paved path, up to the "Bastberg." Again it goes downhill to the Rohrbach. The beaver (Castor fiber albicus) currently inhabits the Rohrbach, directly next to the beaver path. There you can see how Europe’s largest rodent creates its habitat by building dams and blocking streams. With patience, calm, and some luck, it is sometimes possible to observe the shy, mostly nocturnal rodents. Hikers should therefore pay special attention to respectful interaction with nature and its inhabitants in the realm of the beaver.
After the detour at the beavers, the path runs through a forest section to the Metzelberg. Here you have open views again and pass by fields back into a wooded section. The landscape changes here. Repeatedly you walk through forest, along the forest edge, and the landscape opens up again and again for wide views.
At a pond facility with an anglers' hut, it goes again, partly with steep climbs, past fields up to the "Breckert." Past old orchard meadows, you walk downhill towards Berschweiler. The village is passed along the main road up to an information board.
Here, turn right into the street "In der Nauwies." At its end, the street becomes a wider service road. After about 500 meters, turn left into the forest onto a path. The route now consistently goes uphill to the "Rothnberg." Downhill on paths, you pass the Rothenberger Hof and back onto the main road and return to the starting point of the beaver path.
