Quiet circular tour on the Alz

In the corner between the Alz and Traun rivers, a steeply sloped hill rises up. From the top, you have a good view over the land; therefore, it is no surprise that important constructions were built here early on, such as a monastery in the 12th century that would become very significant for the region's development. The Baroque Baumburg monastery church, which dates from the current form of 1755, is definitely worth a look inside – just like the nearby monastery inn, which offers a refined place to stop. A simpler, yet family-like and natural atmosphere can be enjoyed in the garden of the Gasthaus Roiter. You reach it by a small wooden ferry; the bumpy ride on the cable-guided vessel is especially an adventure for children.

First, we head to Baumburg Monastery with the noteworthy Rococo church of St. Margareth. We then follow the signposts to the ferry southwards – initially on asphalt, soon on gravel. The sign "Alzfähre" then directs us to the right down a forested slope. Back on a small asphalt road, we first go straight, then to the left (not straight on the gravel path here). Passing a farm on the left, shortly after, we descend steeply to the Alz and pull the rope ("ring the bell") to call the ferryman. He is happy if you stop at his inn Gasthaus Roiter on the other side. We continue briefly on the paved access road, then shortly after turn left. Passing a farmhouse and on a gravel path straight through a wooded area, we then make a wide curve through grain fields, passing Brandlhof farm straight ahead. At the next intersection, we turn sharply right. Passing somewhat away underneath a farm, we go to the end of the fields; there we turn onto a smaller path branching to the left. This winds through
