One of the most striking elevations of the Habichtswald is the Hohe Dörnberg. Ramparts testify to a settlement site probably 3000 years old. The widely visible deforested basalt dome is a viewpoint of the first order. The summit plateau, which is a nature reserve, shows a typical dry grassland vegetation, created by centuries of intensive grazing with sheep and goats. Around this unique landscape with its columnar juniper bushes and gentians, you can find impressive basalt formations such as the Gnome Church, the Helfensteine, the Kopfsteine, and the Hohlestein known as an ancient cult site. The best starting point for a circular hike to these natural beauties is Dörnberg village.

Back on the Habicht trail, follow the signage »Alpenpfad« around the botanically interesting Kesselberg. When Habicht turns left, continue straight ahead to the Dörnberg hiking parking lot (detour to the Dörnberghaus 1 km away possible). From the parking lot, proceed straight ahead on the field path without a sign, which curves right into an asphalt road and reaches the railway line on the left. Immediately behind it is the hill with the striking rock finger of the Kopfsteine. On the same route, you must go back a bit until a path branches off to the left into a side valley. Later, in the forest, follow the Winkel signage again to the
