The southern Kyffhäuser edge consists of gypsum rocks from the Zechstein, which show numerous karst features such as sinkholes, leaching valleys, and caves, of which the Barbarossa Cave with its bizarre forms made of gypsum rock and its underground lakes is the best known. In addition, the Kyffhäuser edge is one of the driest areas in Germany: the site conditions of its steep southern slopes are too extreme for the settlement of woody plants, so the slopes belong to the naturally treeless areas. There is a steppe turf vegetation with numerous endangered species; especially noticeable in July and August are the feather grasses with their long, wind-swaying awns. The return route runs along the Kleine Wipper, an artificially created watercourse, which was used in the Middle Ages to supply water for the Frankenhausen mills and brine extraction and which today functions as an Eldorado for green frogs and dragonflies.

Sabine Gilcher
