Balcony on Garda: panoramic loop between San Pietro refuge and the magic of Canale di Tenno
This circular itinerary is a true gem nestled in the mountains of Alto Garda, perfect for those seeking an unbeatable mix of nature, breathtaking views, and culture.
Starting from the picturesque village of Calvola, the path winds uphill through woods and wonderful views until reaching the M.Calino San Pietro Refuge, a true panoramic "balcony" from which you can admire the entire Trentino tip of Lake Garda in all its blue splendor.
The way back is a real dive into the past: descend until you reach the village of Canale di Tenno, fully included among the "Most Beautiful Villages of Italy".
Take your time to stroll under its stone arches, among cobbled alleys and flowered balconies that look painted.
The return gently closes bringing you back to the starting point at Calvola, also passing through Ville del Monte.
Note for families: the route is wonderfully family friendly, but the slopes, dirt paths, and cobbled alleys in the villages make it unsuitable for strollers.
Bring a comfortable baby carrier backpack and the adventure will be perfect!

Author’s recommendation
Don't just pass through Canale di Tenno! Buy a piece of cheese or a local product in the small shops of the village and enjoy it sitting on the panoramic wall of the San Pietro Refuge.
Also, if you do the hike in the late afternoon, wait for sunset (the Golden Hour) in Canale: tourists drastically decrease, the warm light lights up the stone facades, and you will take literally cover-worthy photos.

Track types
Safety information
The alleys of Canale di Tenno and Calvola, being stone and cobbled, can be very slippery in case of recent rain or morning humidity; proceed with caution.
In summer, central hours of the day on the lake-facing side can be very hot: start early or late afternoon to avoid tiring the children in the backpack.
Tips and suggestions
The itinerary is walkable almost all year round, but spring and autumn (for the foliage in the surrounding woods) are the seasons that offer the best colors.
Dogs are welcome, always remember to keep them on a leash, especially in inhabited villages and near the refuge.

Roadbook
After leaving the car near Calvola, follow the CAI signs for the San Pietro Refuge, taking the uphill path.
Once past the San Giovanni Battista area, the view begins to open up.
Upon reaching the San Pietro Refuge, enjoy the panoramic stop.
From here, take the downhill path which, gently losing altitude, will guide you directly inside the village of Canale di Tenno.
After exploring the alleys (with a recommended detour to the Agricultural Tools Museum), follow the comfortable cobbled pedestrian path with a slight ascent to return to Calvola.
Public transport
Public-transport-friendly
The area is served by the extra-urban bus line of Trentino Trasporti.
From Riva del Garda or Arco, you can take the bus towards Tenno / Ville del Monte.
From the Ville del Monte stop, you need to plan a short additional walk (uphill) to reach the start of the loop at Calvola.
Always check updated schedules on the official website before departure.
Directions
From the A22 Highway: exit Rovereto Sud / Lago di Garda Nord.
Follow signs for Riva del Garda; from Riva, take SS421 following signs for Tenno, pass the Tenno Castle, and continue until the turnoff for Ville del Monte and Calvola.
From the Gardesana (SS249/SS45bis): arriving at Riva del Garda (from west or south), cross the town following signs for the Varone waterfalls and then climb along SS421 towards Tenno / Calvola.
Parking
Attention: parking spaces are the real weak point of this area!
In Calvola, the parking is tiny and often reserved for residents or customers of facilities.
The best solution is to arrive very early in the morning to find a spot in the Ville del Monte parking lot or along authorized parking areas before Canale.
Parking in the Canale / Tenno area is mostly paid (blue lines) with hourly or daily rates (bring coins or use the EasyPark app).
If you can't find a spot uphill, the alternative is to park down at Lake Tenno (also paid and crowded in summer), but this adds elevation and distance to your hike.
