For several years now, even when the Griessee is at full capacity, the Gries Glacier no longer reaches into the water; nevertheless, the landscape retains a primeval character. The Bättelmatthorn is an excellent vantage point, offering views to the north of the Bernese Alps, including the striking Finsteraarhorn, and to the south of the Gries Glacier with the Blinnenhorn and the upper Valle del Gries, featuring the Ofenhorn and the Sabbione Reservoir. The trail crosses Italian territory during the ascent to the summit.
From Ladstafel, after a few meters uphill, turn right off the pass road onto the path leading to the power plant buildings and follow an almost level road down into the Stocklamme ravine. Cross the bridge and climb the steep, winding trail until we reach the (currently closed) plant road near the dam. We follow it past the junction leading to the dam crest to the second of the four wind turbines on the Mändeli hilltop. Instead of following the trail 50 Hm uphill to the highest wind turbines, we can take a shortcut trail to the right and cross the grassy slope—without significant changes in elevation—to the hiking trail toward the Griespass. The route continues about 100 m above the lake’s eastern shore, where you’ll now cross over to the expansive Gries Pass on the national border via an entertaining series of ups and downs (open shelter).
