The walk through the Aschauer Gorge is varied and one of the tours in the Berchtesgadener Land that are definitely not overcrowded, as they lie somewhat off the tourist trail. In the past, when the Bad Reichenhall saltworks still needed a lot of wood for boiling, the Aschauer Creek was dammed, and the felled wood was drifted down to the Saalach. A feat hardly imaginable today.
From the church square in Schneizlreuth, first walk down to the B 21, follow the hiking trail to the left and cross the Weißbach on a boardwalk. Pass under the B 21 and go ahead to the iron bridge that crosses the Saalach. Then follow the access road on the right – always along the foot of the mountain – to Haiderhof. There, pass the farm on the right and follow the hiking trail directly to the gorge entrance. Here a narrow trail leads into the Aschauer Gorge, which is very narrow at first but widens again after 45 minutes – passing many charming spots that invite you to rest. The path ascends gently, passes the former timber sluice and reaches the state border (the path continues on to Reit near Unken in Austria, with a bus return option from there) after about 1.5 hours of walking time. The return is made the same way.
