The Art Trail is a 10 km route through the woods and villages of Alta Vallagarina. It is a route rich in cultural, historical and naturalistic touches the municipalities of Besenello, Calliano and Volano. The trekking is immersed in nature on dirt road and easy to walk, also suitable for families, but not strollers. Along the route you can see the Church of San Rocco, a jewel frescoed of '400, the ancient bird-catching cages dating back to the first half of the 20th century on the Dos dei Ovi in Volano and immerse yourself in medieval Vallagarina by observing the imposing structures of Castel Pietra and Castel Beseno.
It is possible to go to the discovery of the water sources of Albiolo and Rio Cavallo where, during the summer, you will have the opportunity to dive for a refreshing dip near the Zambel waterfalls in Calliano. If you want to explore the route in company, every year on the first Sunday of September you will have the opportunity to participate in La Magnalonga dell'Alta Vallagarina, a food and wine walk that takes place right along the Path of Art.
Author’s recommendation
To walk this easy route, we must have the patience and time necessary to visit the splendid historical-artistic structures that meet on the way.
The route does not present any particular difficulties or demanding height differences. However, caution is recommended on the small dirt climbs where the ground can be slippery and on the wooden steps, where it is not possible to tackle the route with buggies.
Roadbook
Starting from the parking lot near the Legat Park in the center of Volano, you can follow the clear signs that leads to the path. The route is quite linear and it’s hard to get lost or stray from the main path. You leave Volano in the countryside towards the industrial area, which you follow to the right towards the north, passing through the town of Gazoi. Remaining on the edge of the forest but always in a shady area, the dirt road leads near Castel Pietra, passing us from the back, then descend towards the Rio Cavallo under the imposing Castel Beseno. From there you walk to the cool gorge created by the stream, with the waterfalls of Zambel that are worth a visit and a refresh in the hottest days. You climb gradually keeping the river on the left, passing near an ancient limestone, and then find yourself next to live rocks and small conifers that allow the beautiful view towards the great manor of Besenello. From there the path goes back down to cross the Rio Cavallo with a small bridge, finding itself in the meadows and fields under the locality Dietrobeseno. At that point we suggest to continue towards Maso Trapp and complete the tour around the castle, with a visit if time permits, then arrive with a wide dirt road to a small parking on the carriageway: the path can be connected to this point with the route of the way and return to Volano, or continue on one of the many interfarm roads between the countryside that go south to the starting point.
