Around Wehlen

On the quarry path, we climb out of the Elbe valley and can look back at Wehlen from the Wilkeaussicht viewpoint. On the further way, we pass several old technical installations that refer to the quarrying era of past years. We can still visit the large Wehlen quarry. Here, sandstone is only quarried for special historic buildings. In a large arc, we hike across fields and meadows to the village of Wehlen and can look at the panoramic views of both the Bastei and the Bärensteine. After the fields north of the village of Wehlen, we descend into the Uttewalder Grund, more precisely into the Teufelsgrund. The scenic there-and-back route to the Waldidylle guesthouse (1 km) can be skipped. We then climb out of the Uttewalder Grund into a mixed forest area. Soon we reach the forest meadow near Grögers Gut. Via a forest road, we finally hike down to Wehlen. Here, we still climb up to the Wehlen castle ruin construction site and enjoy the view of the market square and the Elbe. At the market square, it is also worth taking a look inside the town church.
