Ulrichstein is the highest town in Hesse at 559 m. With its castle ruins built on an ancient volcanic vent, the town is the ideal starting point for a scenic hike across meadows and open landscapes of the surrounding area. During the hike, we visit the Vogelsberg in Vogelsberg.
From the hiking portal at Lindenplatz in Ulrichstein, we follow the markings of the Vogelsberg Volcano Ring (»VV«) and the Vogelsberg Extratour (»green-white-red volcano«). We immediately set our sights on the castle hill with the castle ruins. The view from the bergfried tower is magnificent and among the best that Vogelsberg has to offer. From the tower, we return to the castle gate, then turn sharply right and head downhill through the Vogelsberggarten, a botanical display garden featuring typical plant communities from the area. At the Vorwerk-Zehntscheune, a museum, we leave the town for good, ascend the slope over the meadow area, and cross the L 3070. Then we tackle a long ascent up the slope to the edge of the Eckmannshain. After passing through this forested area, the landscape opens up again and a longer path section follows between the forest edge and livestock pastures.
