The sturdy rock castle of the Widderstein dominates the mountain backdrop in the rear Kleinwalsertal. Its ascent is reserved for experienced mountaineers. However, two valley indentations, the Bärgunt and Gemsteltal, frame the mighty mountain mass and allow its circumnavigation – a scenically magnificent tour, full of many different impressions. Several hospitable alpine huts spoil hikers with their specialties, often homemade. One level higher, at the foot of the rugged rock face of the Widderstein, the small Hochalpsee offers a place to dive in. Above the lake, the grassy Seekopf invites an extensive summit view. The distinctive Biberkopf and the rocky Lechquellengebirge draw the eyes. The best spot to enjoy the panorama is the sunny Widdersteinhütte. A small rocky gorge provides an exciting bonus on the descent into the Gemsteltal.
At the parking lots in Baad, we cross the Breitach and hike along the stream into the Bärgunttal. A right turn to the Eggalpe is ignored. Shortly afterwards, at a small reservoir, two ascent paths are available – both lead to the Bärgunthütte. We continue straight on the wide gravel path that stays in the stream valley, cross to the right side of the stream, and reach the inviting Bärgunthütte, 1391 m, always alongside the rushing wild water. Those who want to admire the massive rock block of the Widderstein when hiking through the valley stay left at the reservoir and follow the alpine road over the open meadows of the Widdersteinalpe deeper into the valley – a variant that only takes a few minutes longer.From the Bärgunthütte, the ascent soon follows a narrower trail into the end of the valley and climbs over a steep step.
