Among the numerous lakes in the eastern Allgäu, Lake Weißensee is considered one of the most beautiful. Its rustic southern shore clings almost tightly to the steep slope and is occasionally even rocky, while on the other side untouched reed zones alternate with individual spots for swimming and water sports. So, the approximately six-kilometer-long circuit offers lively contrasts. Only great solitude should not be expected; cyclists are also numerous, especially on the northern shore.
At the beach bath in See, we start the lake circuit and take the path on the west shore at Oberkirch. You approach the steep drop of the Weißensee mountain, which allows our route only very little space at times. A previously impassable passage along rocks was even elaborately built in the 1950s. After a while going over hill and dale on the south shore, we duck through a small rock gate. Shortly afterwards the ground becomes comfortable. Past a shelter to the parking lot on the east shore, a bit along the access road and before the main road onto the bike path that now follows the entire north shore. Starting from a small bay, we come to the village of Weißensee, 800 m, with a noteworthy church and complete the circuit with many picturesque views back to the starting point.

Mark Zahel
