The Vilsalpsee, surrounded by charismatic mountains, is a jewel of the Tannheimer Tal and – located in a nature reserve – is one of the most popular excursion destinations in the area covered by this guide. It also serves as a starting point for a number of great mountain tours. Perhaps the most rewarding is the circular route around the entire basin on scenic high trails, which we want to hike counterclockwise. First, we approach the Jubilee Trail, later come close to the deep blue Schrecksee, which nestles picturesquely in the meadows, and then continue over two peaks to the Landsberger Hut. In the last quarter of the varied tour, the hut is ideally located for a stop and impresses with an imposing view into the north face of the Lachenspitze climbed earlier.
From the parking lot at Vilsalpsee, 1168 m, we go to the right side and initially follow the wide shore path towards Vilsalpe, 1178 m. Here with No. 424 upwards into a large slope hollow. Much further up you leave the access to Vorderen Schafwanne or Geißhorn, turn left and soon reach the Jubilee Trail. This goes along the east side below the rugged Rauhhorn, passing over the barely pronounced ridge leading to Schäferkopf, and up to the saddle of Hintere Schafwanne, 1965 m.Further on, the Jubilee Trail cuts across the partly steep, rocky slopes of Kugelhorn and Knappenkopf on the Bavarian side. The enchanting Schrecksee comes into view, but we stay considerably above and traverse around several corners into the Kirchdachsattel, 1926 m, which allows the border crossing back to Tyrol. With some loss of altitude, more structured and increasingly rocky slopes are traversed before gently ascending again to meet the Saalfelder Way in the area of the expansive terrain threshold. Mark Zahel
