Around the Plansee

The Plansee, located about 7 km as the crow flies southwest of the Ammersattel, is connected by a canal built in 1908, about 300 m long, with the Heiterwanger See, which originally lay about 68 cm higher, from which it, along with the additional inflows Spießbach and Torsäulenbach, derives its water. To the northwest, the Plansee has an outflow through the so-called Little Plansee and via the Archbach to the Lech. It has two basins with depths of 78 and 72 m over a total area of 2.87 km², making it the largest lake in the district (Außerfern) and the second largest in Tyrol.

The Plansee is used together with the Heiterwanger See by the Reutte Electricity Works as a reservoir; during the winter months, the water level is lowered. Divers are especially enthusiastic about the Plansee because of its high visibility. Up to 15 meters can be seen in the quality class I water - ideal conditions for observing the rich flora and fauna that reveals itself underwater.

At the Plansee or the Heiterwanger See, one of the highest commercial shipping routes in Austria operates, offering round trips from the end of May into autumn. A trip on one of the scheduled ships (timetable) is an experience not to be missed. They take you through a canal to the neighboring Heiterwanger See, which in beauty and naturalness is in no way inferior to the Plansee. For those who prefer to explore on their own, electric and pedal boats are available for rent.
