The Höfats is one of the most famous mountains in the Allgäu. Its contours—with sharply defined ridges, grassy slopes that are up to 80 degrees steep, and four summit peaks—are truly unique. At the beginning of the last century, local young men ventured into the inaccessible, steep terrain to pick the edelweiss growing there and sell it to tourists at the Oberstdorf train station. Fatal falls occurred time and again. The edelweiss population was nearly wiped out. Consequently, in 1935, the Allgäu Mountain Rescue Service established an observation post on the Höfats to put a stop to the edelweiss poachers. As you circle the mountain, this prominent Allgäu peak reveals a different face at every turn, with many scenic highlights along the way. The finale is a long but scenically magnificent hike through the Oytal valley, framed by mountain slopes reaching toward the sky.

Metal walkways offer repeated impressive views into the gorge with the wildly foaming Dietersbach. We come to the road and follow it uphill to the old, weather-beaten farmsteads and the Gerstruben inn, at 1,154 m. Passing the chapel, we continue along a gravel road into the Dietersbach Valley. We pass the unmanned Gerstrubner Alpe on our left and, after another half hour, reach the Dietersbachalpe (1,325 m), where the road ends. Our route now climbs up the steep escarpment that closes off the valley. At the Alpe, we go through the pasture gate and head left up the meadow slope. Flanked by dense vegetation, the trail winds steeply upward along a ridge between two stream beds. Finally, we
