At the foot of the High Fens and on the edge of the Hertogenwald lies the Gileppe reservoir, built from 1869 to 1875 (renovated 1968 to 1971), one of the oldest in Europe. The panoramic view from the 77 m high observation tower with cafeteria alone is worth a visit. The history of the reservoir is explained with the help of panels and graphics. For miles around, visitors can look from the reservoir across the forested hills of the Fens and its foothills to the Liège region. The first part of the path leads through the western Hertogenwald to "Trou Malbrouck," a 2.5 km long tunnel built in 1953 to supply additional water from the Soor to the reservoir. From there, the small shore road without further ascents leads back to the dam and circles all arms of the lake on the way. Before reaching the starting point again, the view from the dam crest looks left to the water extraction towers and to the right at the stone Belgian lion (13.5 m high).
