Visitors usually associate the name Thalmässing with the archaeological hiking trail (see Rother hiking guide Altmühltal). No question: The journey through prehistory and the Fundreich Museum is attractive. Since the archaeological trail is a self-runner, we dare to propose a tour that, in addition to an archaeological destination (Celtic rampart), also offers spectacular natural and cultural impressions: It starts with the hollow way through the rampart, which near Reinwarzhofen becomes the cellar path, goes through fantastic beech forests along the Jura edge, and ends with a mountain meadow that makes one believe they are already in the foothills of the Alps.
At the market square in Thalmässing, we follow the marking “4 on yellow” (Premium trail Jura edge), which leads us between the Fundreich Museum and the Zur Krone inn via Schulgasse to Nürnberger Straße, which we follow right to Bahnhofstraße. Here left and past the Thalmässing country inn before the former station building, turn right onto a footpath. We come to Ziegelweg, keep left, and reach Kohlfeld via Brunnengasse. At the T-junction turn left and at the second junction turn right. The path leads through a stream valley into the forest, gently rises to the right until we reach a hollow way and the Celtic rampart near Ohlangen. It measures 150 by 100 m and was built between 150 and 50 BC. Not much of the original form is recognizable. According to current knowledge, the ramparts did not hide defensive installations or cult sites but farmsteads.
