The old mining town of Schneeberg, high above the Schlematal valley, owed its first wealth to the silver mined there as early as the 15th century. Later, an additional 140 minerals were discovered. From the historic old town with its high Baroque market square, the route leads to Schneeberg's landmark, the imposing late Gothic St. Wolfgang's Church from the 16th century. Afterwards, the ascent to Gleesberg, 593 m, offers beautiful panoramic views of the town. In the open countryside, we reach the Schneeberg-Neustadt Mining Educational Trail, and later we come to the Filzteich, a reservoir lake constructed between 1483 and 1485, which today is very popular as a bathing lake. On the way back, we discover more fascinating witnesses of mining history.
From the market square in Schneeberg, we walk towards St. Wolfgang's Church, passing the (former) Goldener Hirsch inn with a Baroque facade (Markt 11). From the end of the market square, the red and blue bar trail signs offer additional guidance. Passing the Erzgebirgische Volkskunst center, we soon reach the imposing St. Wolfgang's Church, which houses an altar by Lucas Cranach the Elder. We continue straight ahead and turn left past the Preiß-Haus, the former site of the mineral water factory of the same name. Further down at the intersection, turn right and then after house number 20, left, then right again into Steingasse. At the through road, go ahead to the traffic lights, then briefly left and right on the other side of the road. Subsequently, turn diagonally left onto the grassy path and at a fork turn right uphill. Soon, a wonderful view of Schneeberg with its church opens up to the left.
