Cozy round trip through the sprawling east

Most of the buildings in the east of Faial were destroyed in a severe earthquake in 1998. The collapsed church and the lighthouse of Ribeirinha, broken into "building blocks," are prominent witnesses that we pass along the way. At the edge of the forest, we initially climb up to pasture areas. Over a ridge, we return to the coast. Those who want can take a swimming break at the end of the circular hike.

We start our hike at the church ruin of Ribeirinha, first following the village road for 15 mins past two Holy Spirit chapels through the village towards Horta. Where it goes uphill again, take the left path at the fork. At the top on the main road EN 1, turn left on the concrete path behind the guardrail. We pass the unspectacular Miradouro do Ribeiro Seco. 150 m further and behind the curve, we leave the main road and climb steep wooden steps on the right initially. At the top, we meet a grassy path and follow it to the left. At the forest edge, we now go uphill on a footpath for 20 mins until we reach a road again at a hairpin turn. Continue left on it. At the fork after 200 m, keep left first and reach the Miradouro do Cabeço das Pedras Negras after 5 mins. Then return to the fork and follow the level ridge path to the left (sign: Espalhafatos), which turns into a track after 300 m. After just under 15 mins, this leads slightly downhill again. Here on the right, a forest path
