The densely populated shore strip between Stresa and Lesa on the western edge of Lake Maggiore is bordered by a wooded mountain ridge whose summit reaches just under 700 meters in height. The slopes gently descend towards the lake and form terraces on which small villages lie. Above 500 meters, where most of our hiking trail runs, the forest has long since overgrown the old cultivated areas.
To the right of the church in Magognino, we follow the yellow sign to San Paolo into Via Ai Fachetti. After about 5 minutes, we turn right onto a wide mule track (VL3, Strada Comunale Magognino – Calogna) which winds along the slope between stone walls. At a fork about 10 minutes later, we keep to the right. The dense forest with old chestnut trees occasionally opens up, offering beautiful views of the lake. After another 10 minutes, at the fork, we take the right towards Calogna (faint red-yellow-red marker and place name on the wall). Shortly after, a worthwhile 2-minute detour to the left leads us to the Cappella San Paolo. Our hiking trail now ascends moderately up to Calogna. We pass by the large church up to a nearby T-junction, turn right there and walk straight for 100 meters until at the village's edge we turn left into Via Motta Rossa, following it for about 150 meters.
