Many of the loess alleys at Kaiserstuhl were destroyed during land consolidation in the 1960s and 1970s. Large terraces were created to ensure the most economical use of the vineyard areas possible. Fortunately, the remaining loess hollow paths were placed under nature protection. Some particularly beautiful ones, including the approximately 300-meter-long Eichgasse, can be found in the surroundings of Bickensohl. The small village, hidden in the Eschbach valley, is the starting point of our discovery tour.
The Lösshohlwege Trail from Bickensohl is well signposted. We follow it counterclockwise, saving the highlight of the tour, the Eichgasse, for last. From the bus stop Im Riedgarten in Bickensohl, we walk about 150 m out of town along the street of the same name towards Oberrotweil until it turns right while we branch left onto a farm road leading to a stable. We follow it for about 3 minutes, cross the small Eschbach stream, and ascend on a meadow path to the crossroads at Hönig. We cross it, head towards Blachengasse, and reach the terraces on Roggenberg. With a beautiful view over the orchards in the slightly lower Ellenbachtal, we immediately descend again to Achkarrer Straße. We cross it and find ourselves in Blachengasse, the first hollow path of our tour. It is paved with grass stones to prevent erosion and still used by winegrowers as a connecting path to the vineyards at Bitzenberg.
