Where the Haune and Gais flow into the Fulda, lies Bad Hersfeld, richly blessed with architectural monuments. The landmark of the spa and festival town, founded in 769 as a monastery settlement, is the imposing ruin of the collegiate church. A historical city tour reveals further sights. If possible, one should conclude this tour at the mighty city church, the tallest building in town. From up there, the view over Bad Hersfeld is unique, and the forested and hilly surroundings come into their own – a good introduction to a hike in the nearby surroundings on both sides of the Fulda valley.
From the church square in Bad Hersfeld, one heads towards the collegiate church ruins. There, X16 starts, which leaves the city center through the gorge-like cut of the Finstertal (also called "Alps" by the people of Hersfeld) and ascends to the Tageberg, crowned by a stone observation tower. From the tower, the hiking trail runs along fields, disappears into the forest, and meets the shelter at Hexentanzplatz. E now leads left over a stretch with a longer descent to the Eichhof settlement. After passing under the highway, E meets on the other side of the B 62 the charming Renaissance palace Eichhof. In front of this former water castle from the 14th century, the F marker crosses, which follows the Fulda river meadows to the right up to the bridge at Kohlhausen. Now it goes left over the Fulda with a double cross to Kohlhausen. Orchard meadows accompany the further path towards the edge of the Johannesberg forest.
