This hike follows a rarely well-preserved mule track, like those that used to be frequented – by people along with their pack animals, the mules and donkeys. In the mountainous Liguria, these were the main connecting routes from villages to the coast and the Po Valley. Anyone who has ever walked behind a mule knows how extremely sure-footed and good-natured these animals are, as strong as a horse and as hardy as a donkey – exactly the stones they touch with their front hooves, they also step on with their hind hooves. Before or after the hike, be sure to visit the picturesque medieval village center of Apricale, which was built in the shadow of a fortification dating back to the 11th century. It's definitely worth it!
Starting from the parking lot in Apricale, we walk along the road back to an adventurous shed, which is built on concrete stilts hanging over the slope just after the pharmacy on the valley side.In front of it, a staircase leads down to a donkey path laid out as a terrace on the slope. We follow the marked trail down to the left along the valley. After a hairpin bend, we arrive further down at a ruined olive oil mill. Shortly after passing under the arch of the aqueduct, a second mule track joins from the left, along which we continue in a hairpin bend down to the natural stone bridge over the Rio Merdanzo, 150 m. We cross the picturesque arched bridge built from fieldstones. Our mule track then leads left into an extensive holm oak forest. Our path is laid with vertically set fieldstones and has held up well over the centuries. After the first bend, it ascends steeply with a red mark to a signpost where we continue uphill to the right. The path climbs through numerous switchbacks a
