Antwerp has a significant past; in the 15th and 16th centuries, the port city on the Scheldt was one of the most important trading places in Europe, centuries later specializing in diamonds. The wealth attracted significant artists – in Antwerp lived and worked famous painters such as Peter Paul Rubens and Albrecht Dürer. Today, with its 500,000 inhabitants, Antwerp is the most important import city of Belgium with the second largest port in Europe – after Rotterdam and before Hamburg. With the containers handled, Antwerp has gained another reputation, which is not often promoted for tourism: as the most important hub in Europe for cocaine trafficking. The circular walk offers the main sights as well as a view of the large Scheldt port from the freely accessible panoramic roof of the Museum aan de Stroom.
Antwerp station is one of the top sights of the city and is also called the "train cathedral" with its 75 m high dome. The terminus station built around 1900 was expanded in 2007 to a station with three partially also continuous track levels. From the station, it goes through the diamond district: First, we keep left (Pekikaanstraat), cross the road at the Delhaize supermarket and walk into the sharply right-turning Vestingstraat. After 70 m left into the Rijfstraat, renovated in 2023, secured with police-guarded barriers, cameras, and removable barriers. This street, flanked by jewelry shops and a synagogue, is considered the center of the diamond district: Antwerp counts more than 1,500 diamond-specialized companies, plus four of the 20 diamond exchanges worldwide.
