Take this route to explore the archaelogic findings both in the museum of Paleopolis and in the arcahelogical site of the ancient port. Steep though the route may be the sights are more than worth it.
This route starts as a branch of Route No 9 at an altitude of almost 600 meters. Leaving the main route, this branch descends in the open mountainous field of the Petalo massif towards the west, to approach the settlement of Paleopolis. The route is framed from its beginning by the stone walls that define the fields on either side and despite its high altitude it still encounters water springs that cross it in its initial sections. Soon the descent steepens and the large mountain amphitheater that houses the Paleopolis settlement is revealed, from the buildings of the Upper Paleopolis higher up, to the antiquities below the Lower Paleopolis and the beach. The descent continues rapidly and the hiker has the opportunity to see an extensive part of the island's coastline to the west as well as smaller islands, Evia and even Attica with suitable weather conditions. After a descent of approximately 300 meters of altitude, the route meets the main road that connects Batsi and Gavrio with Chora and follows it for a short section, passing outside the archaeological museum of Paleopolis. Leaving the main road, the route descends towards the antiquities located below Kato Paleopolis, through the narrow trails of the latter. After a short drive on a concrete road, one will meet the circular part of the trail which circumnavigates the antiquities. Following either of the 2 sides, the hiker will go down to the beach of Paleopolis, next to the antiquities which he can visit if he is there during visiting hours and days. The descent leads to the pebbly beach which the hiker has to cross to follow the uphill on the other side of the circular route. After completing the circle, the hiker climbs up to the main road either to close his circular route there or to continue uphill and find route 9 again and continue his hike from there. In its short version (from the main road and down), the route covers a distance of 3 km in about 1.5 hours, while the figures listed refer to the total route, starting from route 9 to the sea and back again.

Tips and suggestions
You can start the route as an appendix of route 9 - although you are about to accumulate quite a bit of fatigue in this case if you intend to complete the route in one go. Alternatively, you can follow the route in its lower circular section, from the point where it meets the main road next to the museum of Paleopolis, down to the end of the circle and back to the starting point. A third option is to use this route as an exit from route 9 in order to spend the night in Paleopolis, and at the same time take the chance to take a tour of the Archaeological site. In this case, the next morning you return to the basic route (9) and continue from where you left it.
