Andros Route 04 - Aidonia - Tromarchion Monastery
This route leads from Aidonia higher above the Bay of Korthi to the monastery of Tromarchia on the slopes above the western coastline of Andros. Traditional settlements and agricultural land make up the background for the most of this route.
The route starts from the settlement of Aidonia, where one can see Ormos Korthiou and its long beach. As the route leaves the main road and enters the alleys of the settlement, a tour begins in the multitude of architectural treasures of the settlements of this area. Ruined buildings, farmhouses and stone constructions - remnants of the old ways of life in this place, as in the rest of the island - are the basic background on which the rest of the elements of this route emerge. As the settlements succeed each other, the alleys are replaced by cobblestones, passages between the fields and all over again. In this pattern, the route passes through Korthi, the upper neighborhood of Ammonaklio and Piso Meria with a steady direction to the west and steadily increasing in altitude. Throughout this section, the route moves on slopes with no visual obstruction and thus has an open view of the valley of Korthi. From Piso Meria onwards the direction towards the western coast becomes more apparent as the residential groups are left behind and the route crosses fields in the direction of the mountain barrier that blocks the view to the west. Beyond the highest pass, through dirt roads and cement roads, the route descends on the western side now in the direction of the Tromarchia Monastery. At a short distance, the Monastery appears with its stone walls and its bell tower standing out among the steep slopes that escend towards the sea, filled with stone structures as far as the eye can see. A spring with plenty of cold water awaits the thirsty walkers outside the Monastery.
Author’s recommendation
If you are going to take this route, you might as well continue with the circular route of Tromarchia, before coming back to Piso Meria and reversing along the original route back to the starting point.
