Andros Route 01 - Chora - Lamyra - Panachrantos Monastery
Take this route to get the full image of the watershed of Gerakonas, from Chora, down by the sea, through settlements and agricultural land, up to the monastery of Panachrantos near the top of the mountain.
The route starts from the settlement of Chora and soon enters a path, following the route that the farmers of the settlement used to take to their crops. The route is bordered for the most part by citrus and olive groves, while the settlements of Messathuri, Ypsila, Lamyra, Menites and Messaria are met succesively. Throughout this part, the route gradually climbs while encountering numerous bridges over the streams that irrigate these settlements. At Mesaria a relatively steep descent begins, which leads the hiker to the arched bridge of Stichiomeni. There begins a long ascent to the imposing Monastery of Panachrantos, which is visible almost all along the way. This last uphill turns into a path with stone steps and leads the hiker through places with an open horizon both towards the balcony of Gerakonas mountain, where the Monastery is built, and the rest of the Gerakonas watershed which eventually leads down to Chora, where Megalos Potamos (the main river of the watershed) meets the sea.
Author’s recommendation
There are quite a few settlements where you can find water along the route at least in the Spring. But if you are going to hike this route in the Summer or in the Autumn, you might not find that abundance of water available. So make sure you have enough water with you, just in case.

If you are still feeling strong after finishing this route, you might as well descend a little along the route to meet Route 18 and follow it down to Chora, where this trip started. You can do the same with route 17 as a branch of it - 17a - enters Route 1 at a small distance from the crossroad previously described.
