If you drive north from St. Veit an der Glan via Krappfeld, the old town of Althofen, perched on a ridge, soon dominates the view: It is the medieval Upper Market with its large parish church, the castle, and the imposing 12th-century keep. We’ll set out from the Unterer Markt, located below the old town, on a hike to the Scheurerkreuz, a wayside shrine offering a magnificent view to the east toward the Saualm and to the west across the Gurktal Alps.
From the town hall in Althofen, we walk a few meters to the roundabout, then turn left onto Kreuzstraße and soon left again onto Annensteig toward Unterburger Straße. Here, we keep to the left, following the sign for “Pleschutzkogelweg, Trail A2.” After 200 m, we turn diagonally right onto Kinskyweg, which soon turns into a forest trail. At the next fork, we turn left (no signpost, no markings) and come to a wide, flat forest trail. We cross a vehicle road and, just before reaching Töscheldorf Castle—652 m below us—we come to a forest road marked with red-white-red markings, which we follow to the right through a hairpin curve and then straight ahead. Before a hairpin bend far to the north, we finally have an unobstructed view of the fields in the valley and the foothills of the Gurktal Alps to the west, but the forest soon engulfs us again. At a trail junction, 859 m, we reach the gentle ridge. Here we find another signpost marked “Pleschutzkogelweg A2,” which leads us left into the
