Landmark and Dream Mountain with the Famous Iron Path

The Alpspitze, this elegant triangular peak, is an eye-catching feature of the Wetterstein Mountains and a landmark of Garmisch-Partenkirchen—a dream destination for experienced mountain hikers and via ferrata climbers. Challenging trails and via ferratas lead to its summit from various directions. The Alpspitz Ferrata described here, which crosses the north and west flanks, is a via ferrata that is not too difficult and is well-secured. However, appropriate experience and equipment are still required.

From the Alpspitzbahn valley station, we take the cable car to the mountain station at 2,033 m, below the Osterfelderkopf. There, the AlpspiX observation deck offers fascinating views down into the Höllental. From the top station, we reach the rocks in just a few minutes and walk along beneath the cliffs until the “Ferrata” branches off. We climb fairly straight up the north face, scaling quite a few small rock steps along the way. Finally, the route leads over flat rock to a shoulder and, on the very steep west face—where it’s somewhat exposed—to the summit of the Alpspitze at 2,628 m. The entire flank, which is just under 600 m high, is very well secured with steel cables, pitons, etc. The descent follows the southeast ridge (often incorrectly referred to as the east ridge) down over scree and a few rock sections involving easy climbing (I) to a shoulder and then left into the Oberkar. At the trail fork, we keep slightly to the right and quickly reach a grassy saddle, 2,120 m, next
