The local mountains of the town of Nesselwang are called Alpspitz and Edelsberg—the surrounding area is well-developed for tourism, especially, of course, thanks to the Alpspitz Combi Lift. But we don’t want to turn this into a quick jaunt; instead, we want to truly earn our way to the northernmost peaks of the Allgäu Alps. So we’ll start by ascending via the less-traveled western ridge and, on the descent, will later pass by the scenic Kappeler Alp and the Maria Trost mountain church, a stately Baroque structure.
From the valley station in Nesselwang, we head west at first, heading toward Bayerstetten. A forest trail leads us to a large meadow, leaving the hamlet below us. As the trail joins a road, we head uphill into the forest. At Alpenlichten, at about 1,130 m, the route forks, offering two options toward the Alpspitz. We take the right fork and follow a diagonal ascent through partly open forest to the point marked “Auf dem Grat,” at about 1,330 m. This refers to the Alpspitz West Ridge, which now leads the way for the rest of the ascent—offering charming views along the way and becoming somewhat steeper toward the end. On a nearby outcrop, we pass a hunting cabin before reaching the comparatively most challenging sections on the rocky summit structure. Five minutes later, you’ll already be standing on the Alpspitz at 1,575 m. We head briefly eastward and soon turn off into the southern meadow valley. A comfortably laid-out trail then winds its way in a series of loops up to the Edelsberg,

Mark Zahel
