Safety information
Easy mountain hike, only the last few meters to the summit cross are a bit exposed. Surefootedness is necessary here. When descending, pay attention to the trail signs (several forks).Roadbook
The hike starts steeply from Scharflinghöhe (604 m) on a pull path to a forest road. Then continues with gentler steepness to Mühlauer Alm (674 m) and to a large crossroads (764 m). Through increasingly sparse forest, the markings lead upwards to the cheeky rocky summit of Almkogel (1,030 m). The last few meters require surefootedness.
The descent leads in a large arc over forest roads and forest paths first towards Sankt Gilgen. However, at a clearing (about 720 m), you must turn off to Zeppezau/Schmalnau (Caution: easy to overlook!). As soon as you exit the forest, the road leads to Krottensee. From there, it is a few minutes along the road back to Scharflinghöhe.
Public transport
The starting point is only inconveniently accessible by public transport. The easiest is from Salzburg main station (Südtiroler Platz) by bus to Sankt Gilgen bus station. There, change to another line to the Sankt Gilgen-Hüttenstein stop (recognizable by the yellow Hüttenstein Castle at Krottensee).Directions
From the east along the west shore of Attersee via Unterach to the Wiesenau road junction, then via Kienbergstraße (tunnels) to Scharfling and here left upwards to Scharflinghöhe. From the west via the Mondsee motorway exit and on the west side of Mondsee via Sankt Lorenz to Scharfling and up to Scharflinghöhe.Parking
There are sufficiently large and free parking spaces at Scharflinghöhe and at Krottensee (Batzenhäusl inn).Coordinates
