The Schmiedingerkees was developed as Austria’s first summer ski area. Dominated by the Kitzsteinhorn, a ridge juts out from it to the north, extending all the way to the southern slopes of the Salzach Valley. Just before this striking ridge fades away, the Bambachkopf rises; from it, another ridge extends to the northeast, forming the western boundary of the Kaprun Valley. The Alexander-Enzinger Trail runs along this ridge. Well-marked, it offers a varied start to an alpine exploration of this diverse mountain region with its beautiful alpine flora. Staying overnight at a mountain hut also opens up the possibility of summiting a peak followed by a descent into the valley.
From the valley station of the new Maiskogelbahn in Kaprun, the trail leads up to the mountain station of the MK Maiskogelbahn and the Saulochalm right next to it. From the mountain station, hike eastward to the Maiskogelalm. From there, head southwest to the Alpengasthaus Glocknerblick, 1,659 m. From there, ascend to the Maiskogel and follow the ridge over the Dreiwallnerhöhe, 1,861 m, and the Schoppachhöhe all the way to the Stangenhöhe. Just southwest of this peak, leave the ridge heading south and cross the Grubalmkar over to the Krefelder Hütte. From the hut, turn north and descend toward the Salzburger Hütte. Along the way, we pass a trail junction that leads directly to the Langwied midway station of the Panoramabahn cable car to the Kitzsteinhorn, allowing for a comfortable ride down tothe cable car’s valley station . From there, a bus takes us back down the valley to the starting point in Kaprun.
