Deep within the Riedenburg Forest lies the Hart Bear Park, located on a former German Armed Forces base. The park is home primarily to confiscated bears from Southern and Eastern Europe, which are provided with a species-appropriate environment here. The 11-hectare site is designed to be as natural as possible, featuring mixed forests, clearings, caves, ponds, and meadows. There are no public paths within the bear park itself, but it is possible to hike around the perimeter of the park. With a little luck, a viewing tower offers a glimpse of the bears.
Starting from the imposing pilgrimage church of St. Leonhard in Aigen, we first follow the Leonhardiweg, then turn left onto the Wagnerweg, which takes us past Aigen’s second largest church, the Catholic parish church of St. Stephan. At the end of the street, we turn right, reach the main road shortly thereafter (→ Alternative Route), and follow it to the left. We now walk out of the village, initially on a sidewalk on the left, then on a pedestrian and bike path on the right side of the main road. Walking through the fields, we finally reach Irching. We walk through the rural village, keeping an eye out for traffic, as there are usually no sidewalks. Finally, we turn left onto Holzhäuser Straße. After passing the first houses of the small hamlet of Holzhäuser, we keep to the left again and head toward the forest. In the forest, we reach a quiet side road and turn left toward Zanklöd.
