It is no secret that the ruins of Aggstein in the Danube Valley can be reached by car or on foot from the pilgrimage site Maria Langegg in one hour. Less known is the access described below through the Danube-side forest slopes of the castle hill, which finally joins the Langegger Weg. The previously little-noticed circuit offers a carefree hiking experience despite sometimes missing markings, with magnificent views of the ruins and down to the Danube.
From the large parking lot Aggstein take the asphalt road southward to the ruins of Aggstein through orchards to the fork at the mouth of the Aggsteingraben. Do not go through it, but continue straight on the forest road, flat and upwards into the woods to the red-yellow marked cross-trail No. 605 and 653, D, ÖJW, WW. Keep left on the cart path, briefly steep up, then turn right into a ravine. Ascend this northeastward and over a saddle into the Aggsteingraben. Climb its right side to a forest road to be crossed and follow it keeping left to the ruins' access road. Go 50 meters up the road to the left turn (barrier) of an unmarked forest road. Follow it past a junction upwards along the wooded slopes of the castle hill, then right into the west side of the hill. There, crossing a hollow (clear cut), head north uphill, later around some ledges (wonderful view into the Danube Valley and back to the ruins of Aggstein) to the shoulder before the Gerichtsgraben with junction.
