Aggenstein, 1,987 m, with the Breitenbergbahn
The striking, steep, and rocky Aggenstein catches the eye from both the Tannheimer Valley and the Alpine foothills. By taking the Breitenbergbahn, we can comfortably immerse ourselves in the mountain world on this varied loop hike without much effort. We ascend the north face to the summit of the Aggenstein via a steep ramp known as the “Langer Strich.” A short but exposed rock section near the summit adds a bit of excitement to the tour. Thanks to the subsequent descent on the south face, we can call this a classic traverse of the Aggenstein. We can then reward ourselves on the scenic sun terrace of the Bad Kissinger Hütte. Via the “Böser Tritt” trail, we finally return to the side of the Breitenbergbahn—the trail is much easier to hike than its name suggests. The loop comes full circle at the mountain station.

From here, we take the wide trail past the Hochalphütte uphill and reach a fork in the trail at 1,668 m, right next to the top station of the Breitenberg Hochalpbahn (chairlift) on a mountain ridge. (From here, we could take a detour up a similarly wide, gravel path to the Ostlerhütte, 1,838 m, at the summit of the Breitenberg.) To ascend the Aggenstein, we keep to the left at the fork. At first, we hike slightly downhill along the ridge directly toward the summit. We ignore a trail branching off to the left. Then our trail climbs gently uphill, and finally, countless switchbacks lead steeply upward along a slope. (This slope, slightly to the right of the ridge, is often referred to as the “Langer Strich.”) We quickly gain elevation and reach the eastern shoulder of the Aggenstein. We cross the shoulder and
