Scenic circular hiking route on the upper edge of the occasionally Mediterranean-appearing Werra valley.
On 12 kilometers, the Adolfsburgstieg leads over the ridge between Treffurt and Wendehausen. From the viewpoint “Adolfsburg” there is a wide view of the Thuringian-Hessian border area. The mountain gets its name from a wooden siege castle, from which Adolf von Nassau is said to have once attacked Burg Normannstein, the Treffurt landmark. Those who follow the Adolfsburgstieg further, hike through a 100-year-old cherry plantation and also reach mighty limestone rocks. On a section of the art trail "Ars Natura" artworks can be admired outdoors.
Author’s recommendation
- Take a detour to the medieval half-timbered town of Treffurt with its historic town hall and stop at one of the cozy local restaurants.
- The Treffurt cherry plantation is especially enchanting during the blooming period at the end of April.

Safety information
A part of the path runs through open countryside. On hot days, pay attention to sufficient sun protection and enough drinks.
Due to the dryness of recent years, many trees have been damaged and are prone to breaking. Please be cautious when staying in the forest, especially in strong wind. Do not stay under dead tree crowns. Particularly red beeches tend to have spontaneous branch breaks. Entering the forest is always at your own risk.

Roadbook
The circular route can be walked in both directions. The paths are mostly flat and well maintained. The short ascent to Adolfsburg is also manageable for inexperienced hikers, but you should watch out for the rocky ground here.
About halfway, below the former lime plant, the somewhat hidden spring "Eselsborn" with its clear water invites you to refresh yourself.
