About wine, forest and castles
The eye is not like the other. While the eye prefers to linger in the gentle hills of the vineyards, for the other, a hike without a distinctive viewpoint is only half a thing. Those who really want to get to know the Palatinate will experience the contrast between wine, forest and viewpoints today. The tour passes through four vegetation zones: grapevines, then chestnut forests, above that beech forest and on top pine and fir forest. At the top towers the Neu-Scharfeneck castle – thanks to its size and its splendid view of the Trifels region it is one of the most impressive in the Palatinate Forest. Now it goes down to Dernbach and Eußerthal. The Cistercian monastery Eußerthal is closely linked with the Trifels castle high above Annweiler, because the monks of the monastery were the keepers of the Imperial Regalia stored in the Trifels in the 12th and 13th centuries. Following the traces of these monks, the Monk's Trail leads us from Eußerthal to Annweiler.
